Re: [wlug] install fest progress

Do we actually want to go ahead with this?
Because we have today and tommorrow to get things underway or there's no point doing it at this time. We can put it off, but if we don't get things organised real soon it's going to be me sitting on my ass all day at Crawshaw playing frozen-bubble. I'd rather be doing other things.
I am able to help out as required, but I really doubt the number of students we will attract on the last Saturday of the break. Are we doing this focusing on Students or do we think there will be enough general community interest to make it worth doing anyway.
Bugger the students, they don't have much choice about using Linux anyway. Let's aim this at the general public. The date is more than two weeks away. I'm happy to phone around tomorrow, Friday, etc. I'm also happy to design a poster (although it'll suck; I'm no artist). Two weeks is plenty of time to make it happen. Are we doing this or not?

As Bruce has unfortunately precipitated this discussion away from wlug-committee and onto the main mailing list, I may as well clarify this issue for anyone who is interested. We have talked in the past about having an installfest (and a combined hands-on help session, for those with linux installed but with minor issues). There will be 'net acceess, and so on, so we should have a fair shot at getting linux installed on your machine and up to date, and any issues resolved. We initially thought April would be a good time, but we basically have run out of time to organise it. Well, as Bruce points out below, if we just do it, we will organise it in time, *however* at this stage we have no idea of who is actually interested. We don't particularly want to put effort into organising something in a rush now, which could work a lot a better if we delay it temporarily.

Bruce: Yes, we are doing this. However we don't want to do it half-assed. Nor do we want to exclude any particular group who may want help. We can get it organised in this time frame, but given the Easter break and the two week student break, and the fact that any advertising we try to do now will only come out *next* week at the earliest, and with Easter being right now possibly even the week after, is there any point in rushing it? Everyone else: Think about the below questions, and we'll provide a web page or something for registrations of interest shortly. Do you need help installing linux? Want to give it a try, but not comfortable with the technical side of it? Do you have linux installed, but have problems with some bits of hardware not working? EG, digital camera, usb key stick, cdwriter, dvd drive, so on. Do you know other people in this situation who might want to come along? We'll probably advocate installing Fedora Core 1, as its a recent distribution and looks fairly easy to use. If you've already got linux installed, we'll try and help you fix your chosen distribution, or we can help you upgrade to FC1 if you prefer. Fedora Core 2 comes out in mid-may, so we might use this as an install candidate instead. Thanks for your time Daniel (with his WLUG President hat on)

My apologies; however I'm no longer on the committee and so can't post to the committee list. But if we're going to do an installfest, we do want the whole lug getting involved.

I'll accept a delay. I know several people who would be keen already (and now I'll have to tell them it's -not- going to be on the 24th); I'm sure we can find enough people to make it worthwhile.

That sounds like copy for a poster :)

I can see a distro war brewing over this; I've started leaning towards Debian, and a lot of people are recommending Mandrake as a good first-time distro..

Thanks.

Then you were fairly precipitous in telling them it was on this date, as we hadn't finalised anything. I think we can get enough interest as well, however I want to be sure before I commit to spending my weekend in a cold drafty hall :)

One reason distro wars get started is from comments like "I can see a distro way brewing over this.". For this installfest, the committee will pick a distribution. We started this with FC1 at the March meeting, and we'll probably continue with it. Debian is too out of date (as we've beaten to death) to be of much interest to people with recent computers. Mandrake is possible.

Nah. It was wrong of me to insult Bruce in public. I apologise Bruce, I'll have a piece of you later on irc. ;P Anyway, the thing that pissed me off is that we have a committee mailing list for a good reason. We want to be able to discuss committee related matters without a) cluttering the main list and b) turning every tiny decision into a 6 week drawn out email thread. It's bad enough with just the committee arguing without introducing it to the main list! :) It's not a conspiracy, anyone can subscribe to the committee list and see what's going on. All we ask is that if someone wants to voice their opinion, they do so to their committee members, rather that start a long discussion on the main list. But hey, I'm just a self-absorbed twat with my head in my ass, so I'll shut up now. :) G.

as mentioned in irc: I suggest no installfest, but a battle between zcat and greig.. we all know a battle will have more attendees than an installfest. we can stream it to the net for a small donation to watch the stream and generate revenue for the wlug.

SLS 1.0. I'll bring the floppies.

Like Windows 3.0, that would be too easy. I suggest Debian 3.0 from floppy - just beware the Y3K bug. :-) Sid.
