hey guys, I'm new at the UoW and also at this mailinglist ;) If someone is interested in this: I'm from Germany, 22 years old, using archlinux and (at my workstation at home) gentoo. So this is my first question: I've tried to setup an imap account for my university address at thunderbird. But everytime I trying to connect to imap.gmail.com i get the message "Invalid credentials (Failure)". While searching in google for a solution I can only find the notice to activate IMAP at webmail. That was the first thing i've done. Does anyone know something about this behaviour? or how to setup the imap-account correctly? Thanx and greatz, Ivo

I don't know if there are any specifics necessary for the UoW students but here is the IMAP help page from Google... http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=75725 Cheers J -- James Pluck PalmOS Ergo Sum "Dear IRS: I would like to cancel my subscription. I just saw my flatmate login to the waikato uni gmail account but first she went to the waikato login page. I noticed the connections were over https, meaning some of the traffic was encrypted. There maybe some encryption options required for your IMAP connection to work. Whether these can be set up in your mail client's IMAP config or if the encryption is set up uniquely each time following a waikato webmail login, I am not sure. Perhaps that helps. Chris

Since the Waikato student account is somewhat funny (authentication is done by UoW, not GMail), you won't be able to use IMAP with it. Probably best to forward all emails to another, regular GMail account and then use IMAP with that one. They appear to support POP3 access (See http://waikato.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/waikato.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_fa... ) with Gmail. I had a go at making IMAP work last semester but I never could make it do anything. I was going to email the ITS help desk about it but never got around to doing so. My guess is that they may have disabled it - all the IMAP documentation seems to be missing from the waikato gmail help area. -- David Goodwin

The ITS service desk are the best people to ask about this, since some of the details are UoW specific. However most of what you need to know is here: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77662 Things to note: - SSL/port 993 is compulsory, standard IMAP won't work. - Your IMAP username is <user>@students.waikato.ac.nz - Your password should be the same as your UoW one, but may not be sychronised, especially if you've never used https://tools.its.waikato.ac.nz/cgi-bin/changepw so go there and set a new password. - It's easy to lock yourself out by entering the wrong password too many times, so you may need to visit https://www.google.com/a/students.waikato.ac.nz/UnlockCaptcha before trying again. This will confirm the new password you just set works. -- Colin Palmer <colinp(a)waikato.ac.nz> Linux Architect, Systems and Development Team

hey, it works ;) the problem was the synchronisation of password. I changed it, went to the UnlockChapta Link. And that's it! Big Thanx to everyone for your support. Colin Palmer wrote:
