ubuntu 6.10 login problem

I have upgraded my ubuntu to 6.10. The problem is that after the logo, the login freezes with a blank cream coloured screen prior to the login stage. Does anyone know how to remedy this?
Does it eventually get to the login screen or not? It's not obvious from your post. Sorry, I should have been more specific - no, it just hangs - I am unable to log on hence my concern. I could do a fresh install but then I would loose everything on the computer. Thanks for the advice John, but I am an illiterate and the logs, even if I could work out how to boot into safe mode, would be meaningless. With regard to the Graphics card however, the computer has always run fine with all the previous Ubuntu releases that I have used Cheers John

I'd suggest logging in via the console (hold ctrl and alt and press f1) as your user, then running sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude dist-upgrade and making sure it has installed all the packages it wants. it sounds like it might have failed to finish the upgrade. If you are prompted for a password when running a command starting with sudo, enter your users password.

And assuming it lets you switch to the console, when you have finished with those commands you can either * leave the console by pressing ctrl+alt+F7 to get back to the graphical interface (although that will probably still be locked up); or * you can type "reboot" into the shell in the console. There's no more Saturday workshops this year, but feel free to drop in here anytime and I'll take a look at it. Address and contact details are on http://zcat.wired.net.nz
