Course Description The Linux System Administration course provides five days of training for System Administrators and VARs who wish to gain practical, hands-on Linux training. The course is not specific to a particular Linux distribution and presents information about using Linux in a commercial environment. The last day of the course focuses on OpenLinux Installation. Additional courses will be announced as they become available. Linux System Administration (five days) Cost: $1995 Day 1 Introduction to Linux, The System Environment. LILO Boot Manger, user accounts, logging in, logging out, shutting down the system, mount, unmount, Linux directory hierarchy, directory listings, devices, device drivers and files, setting up Linux partitions, handling file system errors, Linux shells, and customizing the environment. Day 2 Essential Commands, Administration of Users/Groups. Essential commands, including man, cd, ls, mkdir, pwd, find, locate, updatedb, cp, mv, rmdir, rm, alias, cls, ln, cat, file, more, less, and grep. Superuser functions, adding users, setting up groups, changing users in groups, setting up user, group, and global permissions, and deleting users. Day 3 Networking. Serial connections, inittab, gettydefs. Setting up virtual consoles and serial terminals, connecting to a TCP/IP network server, connecting to a time server, connecting to NT and Windows, Samba, setting up the domain name server, an email gateway, and masqueraded mail server. Setting up a POP server, configuring a telnet server, an FTP server, and a web server. Using CGI. Internet security. Introduction to configuring a firewall. Day 4 Printing, Package Management, System Initialization, Customizing the Operating System, Troubleshooting. Printing, package management, DOS shell, reading a DOS disk, copying a DOS disk. System initializing, including using sys V initialization, modifying the boot loader using LILO, manually loading and unloading modules, navigating /etc/sysconfig, backing up the kernel, booting with LILO, configuring your system, compiling and installing the kernel, automatically loading and unloading modules, redefining the init process, and troubleshooting. Day 5 Detailed OpenLinux Installation. Preparing to install, preparing the hard disk, and installing/upgrading OpenLinux.
