Hi all, My name is Eric, I've been following this list for about two years now but haven't had occasion to actually make a post until now... I've been looking for a training institute which offers a course towards the CompTIA Linux+ certificate. I was offered a scholarship in Auckland for such a course, but I'm really looking for somewhere in Hamilton. My experience with Linux is minimal - I've installed a few older versions of Mandrake in the past, and more recently got most of a server going with Ubuntu. But I still honestly don't really know what I'm doing, and most of the time I rely on programs which feature a GUI. I'd like to get away from that. I've called Hamilton Business School (http://www.hbsc.co.nz/index.asp?PageID=2145824273) who seem to be the only ones in Hamilton offering the course, but their Linux tutor has recently left the company and so they're not offering the course at the moment. Does anyone know of a Hamilton training provider where I could do something along the lines of a 20-week course via Student Loan? Thanks in advance, - Eric Light

Hi, This post has been rattling away in my head for a couple of days, not least because of the deafening silence it has been greeted with. First of all, I have the CompTIA Linux+ certification, I bought a book aimed at teaching me what I needed to know for the examination, then I bought a voucher for the exam, booked an examination at a testing centre (there was two types, and I stuffed it up and had to go to Auckland, but there were testing centres here in Hamilton), no schooling required. I then sat (and passed) the multi-choice exam. The only prerequisite that I didn't gain from the book was someone had previously taught me how to partition a drive, and install Linux. On a scale of difficulty I would rate the exam as more difficult than, for example, CompTIA A+ OS, the book and the exam covered a wide range of Administration tasks, some were out of date when I sat the exam (2004) but most I have found useful since Job wise, the silence greeting your post may be indicative of what most employers will think when you mention it. RHCE seems to be widely recognised, and Im myself keen to find out more about that certification. In summary, CompTIA Linux+ is best for starting out, gives you a goal, and does broadly introduce you to many concepts. Shane On Monday 17 July 2006 14:39, Eric Light wrote:
