Hi all, Recently purchased a Gigabyte nVidia from PB Tech, hit problems with it (google "8800gt black screen" if interested), and have effectively been told by them to sod off. So, three questions: 1. Anyone got a spare 550W+ ATX supply I could borrow for a few days for last-ditch troubleshooting? (nothing on the web suggests it'll make a difference, but it doesn't hurt to demonstrate that, yes, I've done -everything- to narrow it down to the card.) 2. Once a letter quoting the Consumer Guarantees Act has obtained a refund -- any recommendations on anyone to buy from who -isn't- a thorough fscktard? 3. Thoughts on reasonably-priced preferably non-nVidia cards suitable for gaming? (PCIe, 512MB, etc. the 8800GT was.... -ouch-... $380) ('tis a Windows box -- sigh -- so driver support is a low priority.) ta, Bryce -- http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~butting

spare, as in I'll be ripping it out of a working machine that isn't even actually mine but you can borrow it for a half hour if it helps :)

I really like pbtech, never had a problem with them yet. Don't buy all that much from them though..

Who were you dealing with at PB Tech? I've always dealt with Jann in there and gotten great service, however whenever I have to deal with one of the chinese staff members I find the service is shite. Unable to help out with the troubleshooting I'm afraid as I don't have any high end hardware spare (this caused a problem when I had my recent spate of PC hardware issues - proved into the mobo which PB Tech fixed with a BIOS flash - something I'd not considered as I've never done one). James.

The chinese guys usually. Never had a problem with them. But I usually look at the website before I go in, and know exactly what I want. 2008/4/30 James Pluck <papabearnz(a)gmail.com>:

One of the Chinese guys -- as soon as he saw the purchase date was a month and two days ago he refused to offer any support. (I possibly should've asked for the manager rather than asking if that was the service I'd still get if I quoted the Consumer Guarantees Act.) I've also been asked to help spec out a PC for someone -- PB Tech will -not- be on the shortlist for that. I'll probably drop off a... rather pointed letter to the manager today explaining why I don't consider their support "reasonable" as defined by the Act. (and no, the invoice doesn't state a one-month warranty anywhere. their website is vague on the matter.) I'd figured that for hardware that's on the site and of a known price, they'd be a reasonable port of call. now, well, not so much. Bruce wrote:

Unfortunately it'd be for troubleshooting a (very) intermittent fault, which means probably four-five days before I'd be sure... :/ (more a matter of dotting Is and crossing Ts, but if I put say a Radeon in and hit trouble it'd be good to eliminate everything. yep, the current supply matches the specs for the nVidia, and others with the same problem have still had it after beefing their PSU up.) butting -- http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~butting
