Mornin All, Just arrived in NZ from (not so) sunny Ireland, recently joined your esteemed mailing list, looking forward to catching up with some of you in person at the next installfest. Please be gentle with me... As I've just arrived, I'm looking for a nice Linux-friendly ISP to give my hard-earned cash to - any recommendations would be gratefully received. Google is usually my friend, but NZ certainly has a lot more choice than Ireland. In Ireland many of the ISPs are free, and make their money from the phone-calls. They all seem to need registration here - is that the case? In relation to above, does anyone know if this USB Modem will play with Linux nicely? http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/42656b330da56e082740c0a87f99070a... ...I note that it has a Conexant chipset, which reeks of WinModem nastiness. I need the modem for a lappy, so can't go the internal route. Feedback delightfully received. I have had some success with WinModems on Linux, the drivers certainly have come a long way. Not sure about this one tho. Anyhoo, let the flaming begin (although surely ye can't be as bad as the ILUG...:) ) Cheers, ian -- "Turn off the lights and I'll glow." -Implausible Claims Made by Vanilla Ice in "Ice Ice Baby." http://www.mcsweeneys.net/links/lists/26DougErickson.html

We used to have that - see http://www.wlug.org.nz/ZFree for a brief rundown. Don't any more.

Don't go dialup. Ever. ADSL is the right answer. No matter what the question is! :) I know there are drivers for the Conexant ADSL USB modems - http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/42656b330da56e082740c0a87f99070a /Product/View/XH1172 - see http://sourceforge.net/projects/accessrunner/ for them. How about if the question is price?

I knew someone would ask that. Then you're covered by the smiley face in the sentence above :) FWIW, you can get Orcon UBS 256kbps DSL for $39.95 with a 1gb cap, or you can get Xtra Jetstream at 2mbit for that price with the same 1gb cap. After that it drops back to dialup speed. But that first gig is so much nicer ;) A dialup plan will run around $20/month, but to truly compare you have to factor in the period your phone line will be out of use. As an aside, please only quote the content in the message that is relevant, and don't start new lines with > - when I first read your message, it didn't look like you'd said anything else. Regards, Craig

Craig - where do you get Telecom/Xtra doing that for $39.95 - here are there plans below. http://jetstream.xtra.co.nz/chm/0,5123,204546-203090,00.html $39.95 256 Kb/1GB http://jetstream.xtra.co.nz/chm/0,5123,204547-203090,00.html $44.95 1 Mb/1GB http://jetstream.xtra.co.nz/chm/0,5123,204548-203090,00.html $49.95 256 kb/3GB http://jetstream.xtra.co.nz/chm/0,5123,204549-203090,00.html $69.95 2 Mb/10 GB Please note that for Telecom/Xtra plans you have to have toll calls with them or pay $10 per month more. Also upload is 128 Kbits/sec on all (was 192 Kbits/sec for some but has dropped). Ian

Oops, sorry; the $39.95 plan is 256k only. For some reason I thought it was 2mbit. Still, work an extra hour a week, or get a flatmate to share or something. No one should have to endure dialup! :) Craig

Or avoid the whole driver issue all together and get one that connects via Ethernet. You laptop does have Ethernet right? Or even better get a WiFi Access Point/DSL combo device if you laptop has WiFi. No nasty cables to concern yourself with.
