Stuff that'd be useful on Saturday

Does anyone have: a) a USB steering wheel b) a MIDI keyboard (& a PC that'll talk to it) c) digital video cameras (the higher quality the better, and the more the better come to that; USB-capable ideally) the first'll be good for showing off Torcs, the second for keeping any musicians' attention, the third for recording Nandor's talk. (I'm entirely happy with editing say three roughly-synced video streams on the day while being shoulder-surfed then uploading to YouTube. I tried, work's are all in Sydney.) if there's *any* chance of any of these being there on Saturday, they'd be grand. as for other instruments, I'm thinking of packing a guitar + multi- effects and bringing them in if there's anything to attach them to (and anyone interested). can't commit to my laptop being any use: Audacity will record single tracks to an empty file, but then refuses to even recognise the microphone to record any more. (bizarre, that) (this... also means that the demo Audacity file on the poster -- which, yes, really *is* tracks from a Hammond through a Leslie, a guitar, another guitar, a Hammond through a plain speaker, and a piano, all recorded wild and independently, with a drum solo stolen from the web, all sliced up randomly based on what looked pretty -- is a *truly* hellish din, not helped at all by Audacity repeatedly crashing in horror while trying to make it. I'll try not to play it too much.) butting (mad science isn't just for Christmas, you know)

Yes and no (really as yes!). The MIDI keyboard is just that ... a controller with no sound generation capability, outputting midi note sequences. The PC that I have used it with is an old Windows ME system running proprietary music software ... nothing open source. It is not convenient to bring that computer along. Michael

I guess the MIDI-PC connection is via a gameport? (that's a two-row D-15, IIRC) anyone got a gameport-equipped Linux PC? there's plenty of ways of generating sound from a PC given MIDI input, so no worries on that score; plug a MIDI kbd in, plug some speakers in, and start up MuseScore or whatever. (JACK's black magic to me personally, but there'd hopefully be time for productive fiddling around on the day.) butting

OOps sorry first one sent from wrong email so excuse if this turns up twice. On Wed, 2008-09-17 at 00:33 +1200, Bryce Utting wrote:

Would a small terminal server setup be of any use. I have an LTSP on OpenSuSE rig that I can setup up to ten terminals (four would be more convenient in terms of transportability :) ) It has all the KDE educational packages on it. Takes about 40 minutes to get hooked up and running. Cheers GL

Awesome, yes! I think John Billings has experience with this too. Also it's an opportunity to discuss how Free software can reduce e-waste (that's Nandor's thing I gather) by greatly extending the useful life of older equipment. You'll be along on the day then?

Yep, I've managed to free the whole day.... Will there be room to put up small workstations or do we have to use any tables in place? Given Nandor's presence I'll use the old Compaq PIIs as thin clients. Unfortunately I haven't had time to set KIWI up on this machine and so it's just running LTSP 4.2. But if anyone who's going to be there is familiar with the KIWI-LTSP 5 setup I'm happy to let them screw with it Obviously I'll be able to focus on OOo but I can also make sense in GIMP, Inkscape and equally obviously, OpenSuSE. I'll have a few 32 bit OS 11 and SLE 10 DVDs handy. Cheers GL
