WLUG Meeting - 25 July 2005 Location: University of Waikato, http://www.wlug.org.nz/LitB Time: 7pm Denise Tyrer-Harding of Pipers (http://www.pipers.co.nz/) is scheduled to speak to the WLUG about IntellectualProperty within New Zealand. Denise is a highly regarded IntellectualProperty lawyer and we look forward to what she has to say.

I have a problem burning Audio CDs in Ubuntu/Gnome. I understand you can no longer use Grub and hdd=ide-scsi to achieve IDE CDROM to look like a SCSI CDROM (I tried it and /dev/hdd disappears). But also insmod ide-scsi insmod: can't read 'ide-scsi': No such file or directory Does not work. I have also tried ln /dev/hdd /dev/pg0 That gives cdrecord -scanbus <snip> cdrecord: Warning: Running on Linux-2.6.10-5-386 cdrecord: There are unsettled issues with Linux-2.5 and newer. cdrecord: If you have unexpected problems, please try Linux-2.4 or Solaris. You don't need to make an IDE CDROM look like a SCSI CDROM any more. Since the 2.6.0 kernel, linux has supported native ATAPI cdwriting. K3b supports this quite nicely, I've not used other gui based cdwriters recently, but I'm sure they all support it. To find the device, use: *cdrecord dev=ATA: -scanbus* http://www.wlug.org.nz/CDWritingNotes has more notes on this

Ok making some progress. So I have installed eroaster as suggested in WIKI. Works fine, converts mp3 to wav, but then does not burn? Can not find a Howto as to how you actually burn the Audio CD after converting to wav! also installed latest cdrecord (cdrtools) v 2.01 TIA Bill __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Anyone know which of the many libraries for handling large numbers (like 1MB sized numbers) I should use and can be used with both gcc and MS c++?? Shane.

GMP, the GNU Multi-Precision Library, is the obvious answer to the first part of your question. Its website is at http://www.swox.com/gmp/. A quick google shows that it is possible to build under windows, and there are prebuilt libraries for Visual C++ available: http://www.cs.nyu.edu/exact/core/gmp/

Seen gnomebaker?
sudo apt-get install gnomebaker

Sure I have gnomebaker and eroaster running fine. Gnomebaker converts to wav then burns a couple of tracks then dies. Eroaster converts to wav but does not want to burn, despite recognising my CD Burner. So something is wrong in what I am doing or in the way it is setup! Seeing as we have a meeting tomorrow, it might pay to bring it along to the meeting, wait for one expert to volunteer, and try and have them look at it for you. (If you open a problem up to too many experts then you will end up with people telling you how to do things 20 different ways and often do not get your original problem solved!) Craig

Very late in the thread I know, but do you have sufficient space in your /tmp directory?? I was getting these kinds of coasters from my MDK system which where eventually solved by making (much) more space availble for /tmp. John
