Since I have tried plugging the cable into another port on my switch, have tried changing ethernet cables, would it be correct to assume that the problem is faulty hardware? Probably, although just to be sure run "sudo ifconfig eth0 up" and then run "sudo ethtool eth0" again. If you still do not get link after doing
that, try a different network card.
