anti-theft software

Hi there Just came across the following post on slashdot about a stolen laptop and how it was rescued: http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/05/14/1550217/OReilly-Authors-Laptop-Rescu... The article mentions the "Prey" project, an open-source anti-theft software (licensed under GPL3; runs on Linux/Mac/Windows/Android): http://preyproject.com/ Has anybody used Prey before or any other "laptop-tracking" software? I have it installed on every computer we have. I haven't needed to "use" it yet though. I've heard several stories where cops weren't interested in pursuing/didn't believe the evidence it presents too. OTOH I've also heard stories where the cops thought it was fantastic to have a quick positive outcome. On Sun, May 15, 2011 at 1:49 PM, Peter Reutemann <fracpete(a)waikato.ac.nz>wrote:

I have prey installed on my cell phone, but have never tested it. Really should get around to putting on my laptop too, should also encrypt the drive. Nice example of how to do free software as a service

I tested it and found it quite unreliable (I mark the phone missing on the website and nothing happens, I change the SIM and nothing happens) so I installed wheresmydroid alongside. Between the two of them I hope I could recover my phone if it was ever stolen. On 15 May 2011 17:09, Ronnie Collinson <notthinking(a)gmail.com> wrote:
