decommissioning of mailman server

Hi everyone Just received word from the university that, as part of their continuing move to proprietary Microsoft services, they are decommissioning their mailman server instance by December 13th and only university-related lists will be moved to an MS service. This, of course, will affect our WLUG mailing list. Any ideas where to go to? Google Groups*? Other free hosting sites for such a low-traffic list? Cheers, Peter * Not sure about import options (posts/members).

With the winding up of the WLUG society (and therefore no more funds to pay for a domain), we handed our domain over to a former society member that is keeping domain alive. BTW Just download the complete list archive and the uncompressed mbox is only 53MB, dating back to 1999. Cheers, Peter

Decommission: long overdue and not up-to-snuff with today's email-world! MSFTing: a continuing disappointment, as it's not a real improvement anyway

Think it may be possible through NZOSS - will make enquiries and revert... On 8/11/24 09:33, Don Gould wrote:

What about Linux Australia's mailing list server? They host many LUGs lists already. https://lists.linux.org.au/mailman/listinfo -- Simon On 8 November 2024 7:28:57 am AEDT, Peter Reutemann <fracpete(a)gmail.com> wrote:

Hi all we, TechnologyWise in Tauranga (https://www.technologywise.co.nz) would try to help. We do much hosting at Catalyst (Wellington) and were running the BOP LUG that way for a long time. Regards Michael Doerner On 8/11/24 09:28, Peter Reutemann wrote:

Thanks for the great feedback so far everyone! Important factors for me would be: - hosted in NZ - free of charge (we no longer have a charity associated) - mailman-based or at least support for importing mailman archives Please keep the suggestions coming. Early next week, I will compile a list from the offered solutions and you can show your support for the various options. Cheers, Peter

Just a note that Google Groups is gone, but USENET itself still remains. It was always a much less restrained/civil place (beware of political discussions springing up in unexpected places like weeds), and the traffic isn’t what it once was, but there are places where you can sign up for free, if you can figure out how to set up a client for retrieving and sending postings.

G'day everyone! All (Microsoft) Free Outlook email accounts have a Groups Option. Worth checking out? (BTW: Microsoft-365 cost$ !). BTW: Can some kind person please explain to me Why the WLUG disbanded? Due to transport, & other difficulties, I did not attend meetings very often; but I was really disappointed when it shut down. 🙁 With the Window-10 / Windows-11 fiasco looming in less than a years time - ( Security Updates for Windows-10 ending in October 2025 ) - there will be MILLIONS of W10 machines -(World-wide) - headed for the dump, as 90% of them cannot handle W11. I see this as an ideal situation for the promotion of Linux: Installing / Teaching / Collaborating etc. Your thoughts? Fewer and fewer members, resulting in fewer and fewer people presenting, resulting in a higher workload on those presenting (due to presenting multiple times a year), resulting in much less variety of topics, resulting in fewer members being attracted. Rinse and repeat a few years and you end up with a society that does not have sufficient members to fill its offices. Since no one wanted to step up, the only option was to dissolve the society.

Yes, I agree. The artificially high bar that computers need to clear in order to receive an update is absurd. An up-to-date Linux distro would happily run on those machines for another few years. If change wasn't so difficult for people, Linux would have hit a much higher percentage on desktops years ago. Cheers, Peter
