DSE did not tell me that it would work they said that it should, if not right now then at a future time when the firmware became available. You probably can still get the wireless to work by using a card (maybe dse would help you with that, saves them getting a whole computer back) until the new version is on stream. Another alternative might be to take your machine to the meeting there are tons of lan experts to give you help..
I should have done some homework before I signed the dotted line, although I am going to use the 14 day return to get this steamer back to where it belongs. Im not so pissed at the laptop not being up to scratch, its more that I was told it *would* fit the criteria I set out. Up till now I had thought DSE were better than this.

I believe you can make it go with ndiswrapper. If a machine turns up to one of our Saturday Workshops, I'm sure someone would be keen to help make it go. (I realise its tough to do this while on the road in the US, but maybe you'll find a local LUG over there to help John!) Craig

It was the ndiswrapper route I was struggling with I did as the following said with stable, then with testing http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=31926 Stable 1.16 http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93482&package_id=99148 Testing 1.17 http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93482&package_id=167243&release_id=417606 The one thing in the laptops favour (perhaps) is when I went to edit /etc/ndiswrapper/bcmwl5/*.conf There were no files found in that directory I changed to a different "how to" I forget which, and it suggested using the zip file found at http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=186 Which I duly unzipped in /etc/ndiswrapper Still after following the directions there was no *.conf file to edit I am about to try something dodgy with the .inf file (treat *that* as the .conf file) and see what, if, any difference that makes. Failing that I am heading back into town and returning the laptop

Thanks, I went to give my 'hack' a try only to discover the conf files were present, however the changes made no difference. I thne gave the directions found at your link a go (with stable 1.16). I have to say it was encouraging, as previously I had just run mae all make install as per other tutes, and your link was debian specific However, still no joy, this laptop has met none of my requirements as I outlined to the saleman and Im heading back into town now to return it. On the upside, there will be a cheap laptop (they reduce the returned ones) for someone who is happy with a windows only environment :-) Now to do what I *should* have done in the first place Has *anyone* on the list got a recommendation for a laptop with wifi, that has no linux issues. ie. I can run the wifi on the laptop with ubuntu <G>, I can use kde or kde apps without the screen turning to custard and keeps my legs warm, but not hot and costs $1000 - $1600 TIA

It comes down to the chipset. I used to have an IBM T42 which had an Intel wireless chipset which worked with no problems. Probably not in the same price range as your standard DSE laptop though. I now have an HP Compaq nx6120 which has the same Intel chipset my IBM had. Again works perfectly and probably much closer to the DSE price bracket. Anything with an Atheros chipset should work fine with the madwifi driver. Best idea is to take an Ubuntu live CD into the shop and try it in the laptop you're wanting to purchase. Or ignore the built in wireless, and: * upgrade the MiniPCI card (possibly expensive) * buy an external wireless card ($60-100NZ-ish?) Craig

Many laptops also stop you doing this by locking the BIOS to only talk to miniPCI cards with a certain PCI ID. :( -- Matt Brown matt(a)mattb.net.nz Mob +64 21 611 544 www.mattb.net.nz
