There's not much that's 'local' in terms of geographics. The closest you'll get is probably Auckland where there are plenty of places that provide web hosting. I can't think of any that I would personally recommend however. However if you're willing to use a server out of the country. www.rimuhosting.com is a Cambridge (local) based company that offers virtual servers and is well known within the LUG. I personally use one of there servers and can vouch for their reliability and customer service. The one downside is their hard disk sizing is quite a bit smaller than many of the other VPS providers that they compete with. Having just re-read your email, I'm thinking perhaps a VPS is slightly more than you're after... There is a company called Interspeed who offer hosting based in Waikato Innovation Park, but I can't offer any comment on their service. Hope that helps.
