Hi everyone So far, we haven't got anything lined up for our next meeting in October. Anyone feeling like presenting something? For instance Ubuntu 14.10 has its release 23/10 - just before our meeting. Maybe giving the release candidate a spin and share your experience? Or cool Raspberry Pi projects? Thanks! Hi Peter, I should be able to download the iso and bring along a 14.10 Ubuntu desktop system to the meeting. ...If Ian Young, our distro addict, doesn't beat me to it. However, it seems that 14.10 will not exactly be a bundle of newly found excitement. Looking through comments on-line it doesn't look like 14.10 will have the much awaited MIR... "Summary: Despite optimistic 2011 predictions of a fully converged cross-platform OS running Mir and UnityNext (8) by 2014, Ubuntu 14.10 is set to retain X Windows and Unity 7. Based on this beta, it seems there will be no big changes in 14.10, although upgrading is always worthwhile." "Mark Shuttleworth said he does not now expect Mir as default on the desktop until Ubuntu 16.04 LTS at the earliest..." More speculation here... http://www.zdnet.com/ubuntu-14-10-utopic-unicorn-beta-1-preview-no-big-chang... cheers, Ian.

2016? Wow, that's still ages away. Didn't think so that it would take that long. But then I guess, people always underestimate the complexity of GUIs... openSUSE 13.2 is also getting released later on this year: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Roadmap elementary OS is gearing up for a new release as well: http://elementaryos.org/journal/freya-beta-1-available-for-developers-tester... I'm involved with a project in the open source cryptofinance space, Open Transactions (openTXS). If anybody is interested I could give a talk or a follow up of my bitcoin talk of 2011 or a combination. Greg B. On Wed, 2014-09-24 at 12:43 +1200, Peter Reutemann wrote:

That sounds interesting! How about you send me a short blurb that I can use for scheduling the next meeting? Thanks! Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cms.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

Since I didn't hear back with more details, I've scheduled the meeting as follows: http://www.meetup.com/WaikatoLinuxUsersGroup/events/212122742/ Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cms.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174
