Simon Phipps, head of Open Source Projects at Sun is in NZ on the 25th and 26th of this month. He's speaking in Wellington 5 pm on Monday the 26th. Is there a possibility that an engagement could be organised at Waikato Uni for him. He is a brilliant speaker and has a wealth of knowledge and opinion on Open Source in general. I'd be prepared to do any donkey work required. Obviously it would have to be a morning session on the Monday or evening on sunday to allow him to get to Wellington. -- Graham Lauder, OpenOffice.org MarCon (Marketing Contact) NZ http://marketing.openoffice.org/contacts.html INGOTs Assessor Trainer (International Grades in Office Technologies) www.theingots.org OOoGear: For the Well dressed OOo Advocate http://ooogear.co.nz

OO now this sounds like a great idea. LETS BUY IT! Who do we talk to to organize it? Im prepared also to help out any way nessary. I think Sunday evening would suit most people best (monday people will be at school and work). I have a decent spare room if its required also. Liz

Sounds good to me. We need to book a room though (Jamie normally handles this) and get some posters sorted and up at least the week before. Any comment from President James?

Unsure if James is working back from home yet or still commuting to Auckland for the week. Who normally does the art work for posters? Best get onto organizing this as quick as we can so its all booked. Liz

OK, I'll prone Jamie or whoever I can get hold of tomorrow, and see if we can get a room booked. Bryce normally does the posters, I can talk to him in the weekend. We'll also need some idea of what Simon will be talking about to go on the posters.

If there is a need to cover some costs then let me know as I will be able to help through sponsorship from Datacom. -- Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4/, http://www.jandi.co.nz Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz

Good scheme, I'm also trying to get Louis Suarez-Potts, The OOo Community Manager to drop by as well, on his way home from LCA. The community is pushing Developer recruitment this year and he would be real keen to do something with the CS Department. Cheers GL

Laurie Wong, Sun's Software manager for Oz&NZ is handling Simon's itinerary, I'll drop him a mail and confirm his availability. Sunday night sounds good as there is a 10 am flight out of Hamilton for Wellington. I'll drop a mail to the AuckLUG list as well, there will be some guys from there who will be interested. Update as at around midday today No reply from Laurie Wong with regards Simon's itinerary, not unexpected, I have a back up local name in any case. Louis Suarez-Potts visit is looking more positive thanks to DataCom Generosity, thanks Ian, now it's down to getting LCA on side. Datacom will also come to the party with essentials.... Beer and Pizza! NZ Computer Society is keen to come on board and can provide rooms at Wintec and a large maillist and some cash as well. All in All looking good. I'll let "my group" (about 30) from SeniorNet know. A few may be interested - some came along to SFD and were impressed. Michael

Unfortunately it seems despite best efforts that I've been unable to get either Simon or Louis Suarez-Potts to Waikato for this week. The cost of changing their timetables from LCA ended up being prohibitive and the timeframe was too tight. We're now looking at doing an event or series of events later in the year if I can get a travel budget out of the OOo Community Council for Louis at least. I'll keep the list up to date as things unfold. I'm travelling to Wellington to attend the NZOSS/JUG event with Simon next Monday if anyone wants a ride.
