Waiting until the day before you leave the country is not a good way to make a buying decision but that is what happened in my case _I did_ go to dse and try an install but dopey me took the wrong architecture so the thing failed. My purchase was a Acer aspire 5000 amd64 1.6mhz turion 448 mg of reported ram Installed is Ubuntu and thanks to a lot of support from a Wlug member I have a useful system. I need to hunt around for some vga drivers and some other programmes. So far I have run the machine for extended periods with a heat problem. It remains to be seen how it will respond to bounceing around in a truck for 100,000 miles or so Thank you for all your advise and help. John

Sorry to hear about the issues, I have several acers and we had a similar but easily fixed problem.
The poor airflow is really bad dust protection, So what we do is use a household vacuum cleaner and the crevice tool (narrow slot thing) to vacuum all the cooling ports. Diagnostics usually show a 15 - 20 degree drop in the CPU temp after this. No need to open the Laptop, but it pays to not do while its running.
Could be worth a try
