Fwd: [NZOSS-OpenChat] Little pressie for you all...

Interesting article here. Has some good points but it is heavily biased. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Date: Dec 25, 2006 12:17 AM Subject: [NZOSS-OpenChat] Little pressie for you all... To: NZOSS OpenChat <openchat(a)nzoss.org.nz> Hi all, Speaking of inspiration (and yes, thanks very much, Peter, for the excellent newsletter): in case you haven't read this already, I found this (not so) little gem to be most inspiring: http://www.vanwensveen.nl/rants/microsoft/IhateMS.html He might be dutch, but man can he wield the english language. Enjoy (and spread it around - I'm finding more and more people who a year ago wouldn't have cared less, are now interested in knowing why they might not want to deal with Microsoft... converted a guy - a visiting german - this evening, even). The tide has turned. Merry Christmas to those of you who observe such occasions - happy belated solstice to others. Hope you're all enjoying a good break. Hmmm... Interesting stuff. I went to open my shortcut to cmd window to check out if edlin was still in Win2k - strangely enough, it isn't. Then I remembered I'm running Ubuntu... :-) Maybe the conversion is complete... :-) Elroy. Ian McDonald wrote:

And no MS withdrawl symptoms?

Sounds like it! James. -- James Pluck PalmOS Ergo Sum

Well, not really. I struggled to get Win2K running stably on this system for a month or so (IBM Netfinity 5100 - I still don't know if it is supported :P ), but I NEED to be able to access USB devices. Win2K ran semi-OK, until ANY USB device came near it. Then BSOD after BSOD. My camera wouldn't work, my scanner wouldn't work, my USB stick wouldn't work... Had several old machines with data I needed to get onto this one, so one day I got frustrated and popped in (to old machines) an old Ubuntu CD I had (Warty?). Plugged in USB stick, and there were my files/pictures. Gave it a go on the IBM, seemed to run alright. Decided to install it on the IBM, seemed to run alright. Still working on the following though: DVD playback - MPlayer? Multiple AVI/DivX/Etc - MPlayer? ... ... Will post more later - stuff to do :-) Elroy. James Pluck wrote:

Sadly ubuntu out of the box has a shortage of good codecs and support for such. Do a google to find more info. While I have found mplayer to satisfy all my needs, others will probably recomend alternative solutions especially for dvd playback On 04/01/07, elroy <elroy(a)ihug.co.nz> wrote:

Totem with the xine backend is fine for pretty much all DVDs. MPlayer is also a great player; I just like the Gnome support. It isn't really that difficult to sort out Ubuntu with everything you need. Just go to getautomatix.com and click the link, and that's basically it. Hopefully Feisty will further improve the ease with which this sort of stuff can be installed, since one of the high-priority development projects is better handling the automatic installation of codecs when they're needed (as well as educating users on why they aren't installed by default).
