Santa was nice to me this year and gave me a Pioneer DVR-108 for christmas. After installing this into my gentoo box, I was fairly happy to see that I could run gmplayer dvd:// And have it start playing the dvd. However, it appears that mplayer isn't so good at playing the root menu. After some discussion on IRC, totem was suggested. I'd never really liked totem, and had found mplayer a much better player, but I tried it. Currently it seems that DVD playback with the gstreamer backed to totem is dead. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71519 implies rebuilding totem without gstreamer support should do the job, but that seems tedious. Does anyone have any experience with DVD playback under linux? (distro agnostic, I'd just like to see what software/versions people are using) Daniel PS: Happy New Year - was going to claim FP for 2005 but I see Perry was posting at 3am.

I've had no major trouble with xine (0.99.1) and totem (0.99.16 using xine-lib 1.0.0) i seem to recall having to setup sound but I think that was just to make it play to the card i wanted (2 soundcards). The only issue i have seen is that the video only seems to work from second load onwards i suspect theres a video module not loaded that gets loaded the first time i use it. It hasnt been enough trouble to bother tracking it down. vlc (0.8.0) also seems to be working fine

Yeah, totem with xine-lib support works ok - just not if I want to use gstreamer. Which, I guess I don't overly care about really, however I had understood gstreamer to be some sort of ultimate solution to the problem of multimedia decoding under linux, and it seems like it's fairly crippled if it can't in fact play back DVDs. I'd like to be shown how to make it work.

Never occured to me to try vlc, despite using it elsewhere and knowing it supports DVDs. Ogle (I think) is another player that I've seen mentioned (usually in the same thread as people complaining about totem and saying mplayer is better) I'm using mplayer 1.0 pre6, totem 0.99.22 and xine-lib 1.0

I have always been very happy with vlc. Well til after Santa Dropped off a Windows optimsed DVD of "Pirates Of the Caribbean" - it will only play the tiles before crashing. The DVD works fine in windows!! Bah!!! John

Are you using 0.8 of VLC or later as this is something they have worked on.... see below for release notes... Changes between 0.7.2 and 0.8.0: ----------------------------------------------------- Input: * Improved DVD support: - uses libdvdnav for playing DVDs with menus support - uses libdvdread for simple playback with menus (eg. for streaming) On Sat, 01 Jan 2005 17:57:00 +1300, John Rye <jrt746(a)clear.net.nz> wrote:

GStreamer is a very good idea. Having a framework for AV playback is much better than the ad-hoc approach of different apps we have at the moment. You do need to install quite a few extras though to get a decent gstreamer based system. See the yum repos at the gstreamer website. Though I must admit that I don't use gstreamer for my MPEG4/DivX/XviD AVI or DVD playback. I use xine 0.99.x. Xine supports most DVD menus. I've had the odd problem but nothing too major. Ogle is also very good at menu support. My experience with mplayer hasn't been so good. It only seemed to be able to play back the main movie. Well, I run gentoo, so yum doesn't help. I'm pretty sure I've got all the required plugins however, but it's worth checking out I guess.

You can navigate through multiple titles/chapters on the DVD, you just can't get to the root menu. ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.
