Is it just me or have we fallen off Googles radar? I've tried a few searches including (without the quotes - they just show what i searched for) "wlug", "waikato linux users group", "linux afsnotes", "linux wlug ipv6" and i didn't get a single hit for the wiki. I did get a few hits for "waikato linux users group" that referred to the mailing list, or links from other sites. Has enabling ipv6 on www.wlug.org.nz broken googles ability to access the wiki and provide links to it? Just a thought - not sure what else could be the problem. Ideas? Gavin Grieve

Totally gone. Very disturbing!!
It's not totally gone. http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=waikato+linux+users+group+site:org.nz shows us in the results, although below everyone else. Therefore, we must have a much lower page rank than everyone else. My guess is that having a link to another website with the words "sheep porn" in it could be what is doing it, although how google calculate pagerank is a trade secret. Alternatively, it could just be that time of the month that google is recalculating page ranks and it's a temporary glitch in the matr^w system, but that seems less likely. John McPherson

You are looking at the Google page - Google don't show pagerank for Google. If you click on the top hit, you get 3/10 (not bad for a version 8 of a page); the current version is 4/10 and the home page is 5/10. I think that it'll come right in a couple of days. (BTW, I've submitted the change to dmoz/Open Directory). -----Original Message----- From: James Spooner [mailto:james(a)spoons.gen.nz] Sent: Wednesday, 6 August 2003 9:20 a.m. To: wlug Subject: Re: [wlug] Google searches http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=waikato+linux+users+gro up+site%3Awlug.org.nz&meta= My google toolbar reports the pagerank at 0/10.

According to the Google Toolbar we have a page rank of 5/10, which I think is about what we used to get? On a lark, I googled for my name (which I knew normally returned the Wiki as hit #1/#2) - not listed, but the pages that were listed there had '0 pagerank'/Google hadn't ranked them. My wiki page has a pagerank of 4. So the wiki has a good reading still, but it's just not being listed. I'd suggest emailling Google, but we really aren't trying to sell anything on the wiki and don't want to be seen like we're begging for a high listing. It is possible, yet perhaps unlikely, that the fact Waikato Linux Users Group in dmoz (Google Directory) points to wlug.linuxcare.co.nz and that address doesn't point anywhere, has something to do with it? Does anyone still have this domain and if so would they mind pointing wlug.linuxcare -> www.wlug.org.nz? -----Original Message----- From: John R. Er, yes. My bad. Sorry. Nothing to do with IPv6, or anything. curious, what was the problem? how did you fix it? and how do you know it is fixed? It's in the original email. I was a li'l too embarrased to make it obvious :)
how did you fix it?
I fixed the bug in the wiki.
and how do you know it is fixed? (any change will take a while until it shows up at google)
Yeah, I suspect it might be a month before google gets around to reindexing the site and noticing the changes. DOH.
did you block google from accessing the website?
er, yeah. Google occasionally sends people to crazy places inside the wiki. For instance, it really likes to send people to "Recent Changes" because it mentions lots of words to do with a topic, and has lots of links. Except by the time the user gets sent to that page, it's changed and it no longer links to the interesting page that they were looking for. Google also sends people to pages that are content free. Specifically wiki pages that are heavily linked, have good titles etc, but don't have any content except for the standard "Please describe [foo] here." page. Google also liked sending people to older revisions of pages (for no real apparent reason). So I made all these things "follow, noindex" -- ie: "Follow all the links on this page, but don't add this page itself to your index". You can verify this by looking at the page source of any of the wiki pages, they have various "follow" and "index" status depending on the type of page. However, due to a minor typo, all the pages last time google did an index were flagged "noindex". Ooops. I can't remember when I made this change, I suspect I made it many months ago, just google has got around to catching up. It took me two or three hours this morning to figure out what was going on. Oh well.
