Vocus, which owns Orcon, Slingshot, Flip and Stuff Fibre (totalling 15% of NZ broadband users), has suffered a DDoS attack, possibly still ongoing <https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/widespread-internet-outages-across-nz-vocus-hit-by-cyber-attack/YG7ADTQEZWLGDTTBZ4EEFZ633I/>. Users in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch were affected from 1:30pm, though some reported services returning by 2:10pm. This has also hit EFTPOS payments.

Seems the attackers were targeting one particular Vocus customer <https://www.theregister.com/2021/09/03/nz_outage/>. And guess what, it wasn’t the attack itself that caused (most of?) the disruption, it was the anti-DDoS rule that they put in to block it.
