Hi Robert, The .exe file will be for Windows, so you won't need that. The Ubuntu Community wiki has some helpful information on configuring your modem. I'm assuming that you are wanting to use it to content to the Internet or some other online service. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto If you are still having problems, WLUG are having their monthly workshop next Saturday. http://132.68.73.235/linmodems/index.html#scanModem Links to the above tool are off this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto/ScanModem -- simon

It's my understanding that this is a SERIAL modem (I did a google search on the model number) If that's the case, setting it up should be trivially easy and should not require the scanmodem tool... 2009/7/26 Robert D Davidson <robert(a)datamatrix.co.nz>:

I guarantee none of the software that came with it will be even remotely useful. First of all, make sure that the serial port is connected up inside the computer case and enabled in BIOS. A few computer assemblers don't bother doing this since serial ports are rarely used these days. If you're seeing lights blink during bootup then this is probably all OK. Make sure everyone who might need to dial out is in the dialout group (System, Administration, Users and Groups, tick the appropriate boxes) Install gnome-ppp. (sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp) -- You'll need some other sort of internet connection to do this -- find someone with broadband or set up ICS. If you get stuck here we'll do it at the workshop. gnome-ppp will show up on the internet menu, and it should be as easy as entering the phone number, username and password just like in Windows If for some reason Ubuntu didn't automatically set up a link for /dev/modem you might need to change the modem device in gnome-ppp. It'll almost certainly be /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1.

Internet connection sharing. If you don't have broadband, you can get a windows machine to dial up using it's own modem and then share the internet connection with other computers via the RJ45 port.

Hi Bruce, Yes indeed, I was told at the last WLUG Fixit meeting, after someone spent two hours trying to get a driver going for a Conextant internal modem and failed, that getting a serial modem would be trivially easy. However this has not proved to be the case and I am getting an earful from the groundcrew. Internet connection sharing. If you don't have broadband, you can get a windows machine to dial up using it's own modem and then share the internet connection with other computers via the RJ45 port. -

Yes indeed, I was told at the last WLUG Fixit meeting, after someone spent two hours trying to get a driver going for a Conextant internal modem and failed, that getting a serial modem would be trivially easy. However this has not proved to be the case and I am getting an earful from the groundcrew.
The last time I installed a serial modem I found that the most reliable method was using commands:- 1. pppconfig for setup 2. pon to connect 3. poff to disconnect Michael

Last time I set up a serial modem it was trivially easy. For some completely inexplicable reason Ubuntu decided to take all of the dialup options out of the network manager since then but it should still be fairly easy to set up using gnome-ppp or kppp. I'll bring my phone extension lead to the next fixit meeting and I'm pretty confident we can get it all going in five minutes. 2009/7/26 Michael McDonald <mikencolleen(a)gmail.com>:

Hi Michael, Thanks for that. However how do I make myself root to run pppconfig? Hi Michael, Thanks for that. However how do I make myself root to run pppconfig?
That will depend on your distribution and the account your using. Assuming Ubuntu, which is what I'm more familiar with, at the command prompt, type:- sudo pppconfig You should then be prompted for your password if running from the account you used to set up the system. Alternatively:- sudo su - Which will then enable you to enter commands as root. If you know the root password, the easiest course is to sign on as root. Cheers Michael
