Edge TV Now Online-Only

If there is anybody else besides me who wondered what happened to Edge TV, as of the beginning of this month it is no longer on Freeview, it can now only be viewed as an online stream <https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/113928839/the-edge-tv-removed-from-freeview-remains-available-online>. In the last few days of June, there was a promo announcing that it was going HD, but I don’t recall it mentioning that it was leaving the broadcast airwaves. Quote: MediaWorks chief executive Michael Anderson says the move is in line with audience trends, which show people primarily consume music videos online. While that may be mostly true, personally I would go look for videos on YouTube after seeing them first on Edge TV.

I for one, was very disappointed. Wayne

By the way, a few minutes with the “Web Developer → Network” pane in Firefox on this page <https://www.theedge.co.nz/home/shows/watch-now.html> reveals the following as the URL for the video stream: <https://livestreamdirect-edgetv.mediaworks.nz/edgetv_3.m3u8>. Copying and pasting this into VLC, just for example, works OK, though it reveals the video resolution as 768×432 -- not quite HD. If I rebuild my FFmpeg installation with support for https:// URLs, I could probably use that on it as well.

Cool tip many thanks. Cheers John.. On 5/07/19 9:00 PM, Lawrence D'Oliveiro wrote:

Using ffplay on my Linux Mint 19.1 worked out of the box: ffplay https://livestreamdirect-edgetv.mediaworks.nz/edgetv_3.m3u8 Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann Dept. of Computer Science University of Waikato, NZ +64 (7) 858-5174 http://www.cms.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ http://www.data-mining.co.nz/

Sometimes binary packages omit features for patent reasons. Also I can specify both --enable-gpl and --enable-nonfree in the build, and guess what I end up with? ;)

Also try this: ffplay -vf scale=1536:864 https://livestreamdirect-edgetv.mediaworks.nz/edgetv_3.m3u8 to make more use of your PC screen. ;)

Correction. After a bit of experimenting, I have discovered that there are 4 different URLs available: <https://livestreamdirect-edgetv.mediaworks.nz/edgetv_1.m3u8> -- 1280×720 <https://livestreamdirect-edgetv.mediaworks.nz/edgetv_2.m3u8> -- 1024×576 <https://livestreamdirect-edgetv.mediaworks.nz/edgetv_3.m3u8> -- 768×432 <https://livestreamdirect-edgetv.mediaworks.nz/edgetv_4.m3u8> -- 512×288 So yes, it is available in HD.

Good information. Thanks Lawrence.. Cheers John.. On 16/08/19 4:49 PM, Lawrence D'Oliveiro wrote:

Well, it looks like the channel’s days as an online-only operation are over. It’s back on Freeview 11. Not sure when it returned, but I suspect it was today, judging from the way my Freeview tuner gets a little hiccup every time the channel selection changes like this. ;) Addendum: yes, it was today, and the move was announced last month <https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/119411471/the-edge-tv-is-coming-back-breeze-tv-to-launch-on-freeview>.

It’s strange, when I press the Info button on my Freeview decoder, it insists channel 11 is SD, not HD. However, I have noticed that some of the videos look really good and fine-detailed. So my conclusion is, you are right, and my decoder is lying to me. And I think this might also apply to some other channels that my decoder says are SD. /me goes off mumbling about how you can’t trust these infernal machines any more ...
