Hi, I'm running Debian/testing and I just tried to install a new package that had to update a lot of dependencies. Some of the downloads timed out, this is because they are outdated and no longer exist in the pool, so I need to do an apt-get update. This usually works out fine but right now apt-get update doesn't update the package files. I checked the packages it wants on the Debian website and they have been updated. Why would apt-get update have suddenly stopped working properly? (I'm also using apt-proxy but I don't think that should affect it) g -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz

Hi Glenn, It's most likely this. [crb(a)brian crb]$ ftp ftp.nz.debian.org Connected to ftp.nz.debian.org (202.7.4.9). 550- ISP Routing Error 550- 550- Your ISP's access to local New Zealand content is currently 550- broken. Please contact your ISP and advise them that they 550- may well be able to fix this problem for you by peering with 550- the route servers and/or other ISPs at the APE or the WIX. 550- 550- The server you have connected to is not within New Zealand. 550- In order to protect you from prohibitive international 550- traffic charges, you will not be able to access the resources 550- you were looking for, here. 550- 550- We apologise for any inconvenience. 550 ftp> If this is the case, change the sources.list in your apt proxy machine to ftp.au.debian.org or ftp.debian.co.nz, and send an email off to your ISP/Telecom complaining about their peering policy. The best explaination I've found about this peering debate is here: http://scorchio.pure-guava.org.nz/cgi-bin/wiki/kwiki.cgi?DePeeringForNewbies

Thanks, but unless they changed it between and this morning last night it's not that. glenn(a)pixie:glenn$ ftp ftp.nz.debian.org Connected to ftp.citylink.co.nz. 220 (vsFTPd 1.2.1) Name (ftp.nz.debian.org:glenn): anonymous 331 Please specify the password. It's something of that nature, I can't get to it either... I've had to use ftp.au.debian.org for the last few days - royal pain in the face. I'm not even lucky enough to get the error message if I try ftp'ing in. Cheers, James.

I've switched to ftp.auckland.ac.nz/linux/dists/debian . I think it's ftp only and not an official mirror but it's local. g -- Glenn Ramsey <glenn(a)componic.co.nz> 07 8627077 http://www.componic.co.nz
