'With Microsoft's decision to end development of its own Web rendering engine and switch to Chromium, control over the Web has functionally been ceded to Google.'
One difference being, the guts of the browser (and in particular its HTML-rendering engine) are now open source. Remember, they forked Blink off WebKit, which Apple in turn forked off KDE Konqueror’s KHTML. So what they did, can in turn be done to them. Mozilla came out of nowhere to overthrow the hegemony of Internet Explorer; some new outfit could do the same thing in the future.
