When I run update-manager as root I get "(synaptic:7648): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_destroy: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done" It did however down load a small update for Mozilla. If I try to run it (or anything else) from the gui I am asked for a password by the widget. My root pass and my user pass does not work (even Gandhalf is no good)
The correct password is your user password, the one you used to log in. Check obvious things like case - I've not seen a scenario where the correct password just 'didn't work' unfortunately. As for Gandalf, you have inserted a miscreant 'h', which is why that password didn't work.
I think this last issue is unrelated, on boot I get "ror: temporary unable to resolve name"
Are you connected to the Internet when you boot? If you're set up to do DHCP and not connected, you won't be able to resolve your own hostname. This is harmless and can be ignored in most cases. Craig
