I dumped the Ubuntu in favour of the OpenSUSE 11.3 64 bit today. It figured out I had a modem during install and installed wvdial and qinternet. Modem was listed in network devices and I was on the net within two minutes of the install finishing. Trivial. Even easier than windows because I didn't have to install modem drivers. Sweet !
