There was this assumption that Microsoft was making a lot of money from Android, precisely through its patent protection racket. Yet Microsoft’s mobile division kept losing huge amounts of money. I was assuming that such royalty income would have been included under that division; yet it seemed far from sufficient to counter the massive failure that was Windows Phone. Experience from elsewhere suggests that patent trolling is typically not a sustainable business model.
