As a first q
Can someone tell me where to put index.html once apche is installed .. so that it pops up when a remote system probes?
It does depend on your distro/package. Normally it goes in /var/www/index.html, however that's not always the case. If you look for the line "DocumentRoot" in your apache.conf it should say where it is.
