Desktop switching is provided by one of the plugins for compiz, so it's possible that this plugin is somehow turned off or reconfigured now. Try installing simple-ccsm and running it (shows up as CompizConfig Settings Manager in the System Preferences menu) and looking through the plugins to see what's there. By default (I think), the "Desktop Wall" plugin handles switching between viewports. Maybe this has been disabled, or another plugin has taken over.
I'm actually using GNOME 2.32.1 -- I believe GNOME 3 won't be default until 11.10 is released. Following Bruce's suggestion to switch back to Metacity works (I installed fusion-icon), but switching back to Compiz still shows that it's impossible to switch between workspaces. At least I have a work-around now.

I try not to lose too much sleep over problems. If I can fix it, I will. If not, I either live with it and wait until the next release or try something else. Have had an interesting time over the lifetime of this laptop with wireless! Used other distros until Ubuntu worked "out of the box" with my wireless.
I've got a few puzzles to sort out - some of which may never get solved because it's much easier to work around the problem. (An interesting one at the moment is that Windows XP running in a virtual machine in Windows 7 can't "see" a printer on the local network ... the local network is 192.168.1.xxx, and the virtual XP IP address is 192.168.yyy.xxx (forgotten the actual numbers, but yyy is>100). XP has no problems seeing the network on the other side of the router/modem!). In the past (as far as I remember!) I've noted similar problems with VirtualBox (Linux within Linux) but never worked out how to communicate with a virtual machine over the local network.
