Will try again.

Started Firefox, surfed to mail.google.com/mail
Logged in, clicked "Compose"
Clicked the paper clip on the bottom line of the compose window, used
the file selector that popped up to choose a file.
A progress bar showed the file uploading.
Sent the e-mail, checked that it was received ok.

I have noticed that my computer connects to my phone using Media
Transfer Protocol rather than mounting it as a partition, so I always
transfer photos to my hard disk before e-mailing them. You said you
tried that, I can only suggest trying that again, and perhaps verifying
that the file got copied across before you try attaching it.

Cheers,

Wayne
