The abovementioned nations have issued a joint statement <https://www.theregister.com/2020/10/11/international_statementon_end_to_end_encryption_and_public_safety/> where they “urge industry to address our serious concerns where encryption is applied in a way that wholly precludes any legal access to content”. One of the ways to do this is “Enable law enforcement access to content in a readable and usable format where an authorisation is lawfully issued, is necessary and proportionate, and is subject to strong safeguards and oversight”. To the extent that this is not calling for restrictions on strong encryption altogether, merely on its wide adoption by certain large companies, I can live with it. Just so long as we are not forced into using the products and services provided by these companies as an inescapable part of our daily lives.
