You’d think CAs would prefer shorter terms and more, smaller bumps in their cashflow instead of fewer, bigger ones. But they know the extra headaches their customers would face from more frequent renewals might give even more momentum to Let’s Encrypt <https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/08/13/site_certificate_lifetimes/>: In other words, slashing the lifetime may drive organizations into using Let's Encrypt for free, rather than encourage them to cough up payment more regularly to outfits like Digicert. Digicert and its ilk charge, typically, hundreds of dollars for their certs: forcing customers to fork out more often may be more of a turn off than a money spinner.
