I downloaded the file from Adobe and got a binary on my desktop but now I can't get any application to do anything with it and it won't run.
You have to download the "Linux x86 (.deb)" file: http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/ Ubuntu is a "debian"-based distribution and debian packages have the ".deb" extension.
