They didn't work from the live cd but a small piece fell out of the front usb port. Maybe thats the reason it wouldn't work and its also effecting the rear ports as well.
It sounds like you've snapped the little plastic part off inside the connector. You probably need to get the whole connector replaced. You might also have damaged the controller if anything got shorted, but I've found they're surprisingly robust. Mine was shorted for about 15 minutes before I noticed (from the burning smell) and it still worked afterwards.
