An Intel HAM PCI modem is a very good option (if it is interent you are trying to achive)<br>you can get them fairly cheeply from DSE (and DSE support linux somewhat) (that is, if you want to open the pc up and do some hardware shuffling)<br>

thanks for all the great information. I had a serial modem that came<br>
installed in the machine when I bought it a couple of months ago. Its<br>
a brand new computer and I couldnt get scanmodem to detect it, thats<br>
why I tried to install a USB modem instead.<br>
I can supply output of the scanmodem program if required.<br>
