Currently it seems that DVD playback with the gstreamer backed to totem is dead. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71519 implies rebuilding totem without gstreamer support should do the job, but that seems tedious.
Does anyone have any experience with DVD playback under linux? (distro agnostic, I'd just like to see what software/versions people are using)

GStreamer is a very good idea. Having a framework for AV playback is much better than the ad-hoc approach of different apps we have at the moment. You do need to install quite a few extras though to get a decent gstreamer based system. See the yum repos at the gstreamer website. Though I must admit that I don't use gstreamer for my MPEG4/DivX/XviD AVI or DVD playback. I use xine 0.99.x. Xine supports most DVD menus. I've had the odd problem but nothing too major. Ogle is also very good at menu support. My experience with mplayer hasn't been so good. It only seemed to be able to play back the main movie.
