I've been using Ubuntu for a few weeks now, and have found it very friendly in a number of areas where I felt a little ill at ease in Fedora (which I used for some months before that). I'm not a power user by any stretch of the imagination (as Plug and kinko on IRC will attest (:) but I am more than happy to offer any help I can to new users who have chosen to try it. With regard to yum especially, yum 2.2 in Fedora Core 3 addresses lots of the shortfauls in yum 2.0 (it now has .repo files, which are more like apt's Packages/Releases, instead of thousands of little .hdr files).
Perhaps this discussion could be held at http://www.wlug.org.nz/SelectingADistribution which needs an overhaul. We could also perhaps have a list of the top 10 things that are different in each distro (ie how to get security updates, how to get MP3 playback, how to configure your network card). Giving up on the list isn't a good way to stop other people from having problems.
Remember also we're more than happy to look at machines at LUG meetings. Just let us know in advance if you need an internet connection so we can arrange one.
