Yes it ran on DOS, in fact that was where it started out, with bits lifted from the Linux Kernel of the time.

That's not the 'standard' Linux kernel. It's only fair that you compare it against a similarly cut-down Microsoft product, WinCE or perhaps MSDOS, which is capable of running on much lower-spec hardware than the standard XP desktop, obviously.
