Microsoft has become so dominant a supplier to the US Government that it cannot be effectively called to account on its repeated security lapses <https://www.theregister.com/2024/04/21/microsoft_national_security_risk/>. Even something as basic as event logging (which would have helped track exposure to things like the SolarWinds breach) was an extra-cost service that Microsoft customers had to pay for. Microsoft is squeezing a lot of profit out of those customers, and it feels no need to let up.
