I see it the opposite way: having complexity at both client and server ends causes more trouble than having it at just one end. At some point, the desire of the major websites to have more control over their users will lead them to reinvent the good old “dumb terminal”. Remember that previous announcement about Google Docs moving towards a Canvas-based system for its rendering? I think that’s a step in that direction.
