Long story short, before you access the scanner with any config/graphics software, you need to upload the firmware to the scanner (this happens every time you use it, IIRC). I think I had to search (for the firmware file) through the win32 driver package for this scanner, and there was a *.BIN? file that contains the firmware - this gets copied to some lib folder (under Ubuntu) and is specified in USB init? to load to xyz pre-specified device... apologies for vagueness... I believe libusb? was used to auto-upload the firmware on scanner connection to USB sub-system... unfortunately my Vuego 4300U was last configured/running with Ubuntu 6.06? - have not tried installing on 7.04 (current ver.) yet.
