I'm afraid I agree with Michael - your version of Fedora is too old, and as a Linux beginner you'll be making things much harder for yourself by not running an up-to-date version. Recent versions of the main distributions often include updated drivers that may work better with your hardware.
I'm sure someone on the list can supply you with the latest Fedora, and if not I'd be happy to snailmail you a 64bit Ubuntu DVD.
Keep us posted, and best of luck with your foray into Linux - it'll be worth it, honest!
