Thanks for the suggestions and the offer to help. The following page shows the Emulation setting page on the Kycoera printer http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~cmoman/FS-9500DN.png I changed the Network emulation from PCL to AUTO (KPDL was another option but I didn't want to stuff up other people printing) and now the test page prints perfectly. I live close to the printer so if other people's jobs get stuffed up by the AUTO setting I'll hear about it and then I can change it back. Thanks again for the tip on KPDL. The printer is connected to a local lan and most people print to it via Windows XP computers via a Windows server.
I am using KDE with CUPS and have successfully printed to a brother colour laser using IPP and the PPD file from the Brother website.
I am using the PPD file from the Kyocera file and linuxprinting.org says the Kyocera is supported perfectly. The Kyocera doesn't appear to use IPP but can be seen as a network printer or via SAMBA but I am not sure if this makes a difference.
From what I have described is a solution obvious?
Just wondering (I'm not an expert!) ... with a HP Jet Direct printer on a network, you print to port 9100 for Postscript. Is it the same for Kyocera?

Yes you are correct, there is in fact 9100 - 9108(?) available for different configs on the Kyocera IB print systems. For certain reasons PS is called KPDL on these.
I unfortunately forgot to put knoppix in my tool case today, so was unable to have a look at your problem with CUPS. If things are quiet on monday I will have a fiddle with it. The other thing you could check is that it is set to auto emulate and not forced to a PCL mode.
