I just had an empty screen. I ls'd the /usr/share/doc directory and I couldn't find any listing for sl-modem. Am I right to assume that this is not installed, and if so, how can I install the package from my install cd?
To be honest, I don't know that it is on your CD, I only assumed it was as it seems like something that *should* be on there. There's no need to use the ubuntu packages, it just might be easier. Feel free to carry on using the standard smartlink stuff (I seem to recall you saying you had the output of scanmodem earlier?) Also, I just found this: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/Ubuntu/ It's a set of prebuilt modules for Ubuntu, which may help you. Check your kernel version with uname -r (eg, mine is 2.6.24-21-generic, but if you haven't managed to update yours yet then yours should be a lower version, eg 2.6.24-16-generic) Download the appropriate version - so if your kernel version is 2.6.24-16-generic, then get http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/Ubuntu/slamr-2.6.24-16-ge..., copy it onto your ubuntu system, uncompress it with tar zxvf filename in a shell window, and then go from there. You'll need to be careful if/when there are kernel updates, because your modem driver won't get upgraded automatically, but if you have problems you can always boot into an earlier kernel version at the boot menu.
