First I heard about it today, but it’s the beginning of the end for copper phone lines; Chorus is going to cut off a few installations (“fewer than 5000”) on a trial basis later this year <https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/124317060/first-copper-phone-services-to-be-cut-from-september-under-chorus-plan>: Chorus chief executive Jean-Baptiste Rousselot said that outside of those “limited initial trial areas” no-one should feel under any pressure to move off copper. This will only happen in areas where the takeup of fibre is already high, and customers will get six months’ notice.
