Any suggestions for a replacement of my conexant hcf internal, modem which has stopped since I upgraded to fedora 2? The DS Intel Ham has a similar problem with the chip manufacturer having a proprietry component to the driver and not upgrading to the latest linux releases
I'd get a Lectron I56PSP/F40 PCI modem from Ascent (http://www.ascent.co.nz/mn-product-spec.asp?pid=120287). $20.93, and it works well in linux. Get the ltmodem drivers from http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/. If you're running FC2 on a P2 or Celeron or later, you'll *probably* be ok to get the binary release drivers - make sure you get the right one for the kernel you are running however! Type uname -r on a shell prompt to get the kernel revision, and make sure the file name you are getting has the same kernel revision. If your machine is reasonably fast, it is fairly easy to get the source package and use that instead. It is well documented, and actually has a couple of scripts which automate the entire process for you. You'll need to install all your standard kernel compilation tools however. As an aside, there is a wiki page dealing with winmodems, could people add their experiences with these? http://www.wlug.org.nz/WinModem
