We can probably figure it out at the meeting but I'd be interested to know what version of Latex it has installed. My Ubuntu 12.04 was miles behind the Tex repos so I ended up installing the Tex/Latex in its own directory, ie /texlive I understand now there is a bit more a concerted effort to keep the ubuntu package manager upto date to the tex reposositories.
