The best way of describing Jack is that it's like a virtual patch-bay and a whole lot of cables. :) It allows you to route, split, and combine inputs and outputs from anything to anything else. The professional audio recording workstation software ardour makes extensive use of Jack.

Yes I've seen mention of that use quite a bit but they way it is being promoted seems to be as a replacement for standard mixers for programs etc which is where pulseaudio also seems to be... It's also quite clear that Arts which is used by KDE extensively in the past seems to be dying also.
