Thank you, all.
I'm using KDE 3.5 on Debian Lenny. "update-notifier" *says* it will work on KDE. I've followed the advice I just found here:
"update-notify" is running in the background now, and a grey icon appeared (and disappeared) in the KDE System Tray. I'll wait for an update to come up and see what happens. If nothing, I'll subscribe to "debian-user" and ask.
[I am replying to myself to report back.] It worked for me! The Update Notify icon is a 'notification' rather than an 'applet', so it only appears in the system tray when that the Apt repository database is updated. I can make it pop up by running "apt-get update". I just need to set up "apt-get update" to run every time I turn on my PC now, and things will work like I expected. (Synaptic has a tick box to schedule automatic daily updates, but they seem to happen at unpredictable times.) Putting a "apt-get update" script in "/etc/rc*.d" somewhere seems to be the right thing to do. The mystery is why this didn't work out-of-the-box. --Glyn
